American life Vs.Canadian life

Something I have not been able to get my head around since living here in the United States is how guns are such a part of life here. I mean Michael Moore's "Bowling for Columbine" is just skimming the surface.

For an example, while my husband and I were on our road trip just two hours south of here, we passed this beautiful tree farm, with billboards that read "Show those thugs, make them run in fear, Guns Save life" I am not kidding. In the news just the other day there was a 12 year old girl shot while playing outside in a playground, crossfire. One of my bosses, came to work today and told me she had to leave cause her cousin was shot in the back and they are not sure if he will walk again. Guess where he was...at a party with some friends, an argument broke out and he got hit, he had nothing to do with whatever was going on. The most disturbing part is people act like this is no big deal, like having your gall bladder removed, or having a hang nail. This is a way of life!! That is what scares me the most about this country. Gang violence and shootings are a way of life for people who live in the less affluent parts of the city here. Again this is not alright. Don't get me wrong Canada has its share of violent crimes and shootings, but this is on a much bigger scale here. A lot of these stories don't make the news here..you know why? Cause its a common event. The only time it makes headlines if its a child or woman. Sad but it's the truth. I am in shock at how desensitized people have to be, because this is a way of life for them.
