So technically this is the tail end of Day 1 in Fredericksburg since we didn't actually get in until late last night. It has been a very eventful 24 hours! Where to begin....
Well we got some much needed sleep, and woke up to a power failure in our hotel. Thankfully my husband is a McGiver and had his head lamp ready so we set it in the bathroom mirror to light up the room long enough to take a shower. From there we went on a grand adventure. First stop was a visit to the University of Mary Washington and the neighborhoods around it. We actually went to pick up the key for the housing the University is putting us up in starting tomorrow. From there we spent at least 30-45 minutes circling a one way street trying to find the cute little house so I knew where I was going tomorrow when I got to unload after taking Paul to his first day of work.
From there we headed to the post office and opened our post office box until we have a permanent address. The lady Lillian was sooo sweet. Very helpful, and not the usual personality you meet in the post office of visits past in other cities. She even called me "Miss Shannon". *sigh* so much nicer than being called Ma'am. lol...
After that we attempted to locate this specific bank, and for some reason our GPS was not able to locate the place we wanted. Come to find out we need an upgrade on the damn thing which makes sense as to why last night it was telling me to take an exit that didn't exist. By this point we hadn't eaten breakfast and we were close to lunch hour so tensions were getting a bit high. We decided to ditch the bank and get lunch and try our luck after we ate, and were feeling better. Lucky for us I made a left turn and we found ourselves in Historic Downtown Fredericksburg. Gorgeous! I loved it! It reminded me of Halifax in so many ways, and then of old english row houses rolled into one. We stopped at SammyT's and it was SOOOO good! They have the best vegetarian and vegan selection if you prefer that, as well as stuff for non-veggies, which I can say was phenomenal and not bad price wise. Once we got some nourishment and felt more like ourselves we walked around, and stopped into the visitor center, hoping someone could help us find this bank. Cil was the lovely lady who helped us there. We told her we just moved to town and she was telling us about places in her neighborhood that were for rent, totally giving the hard sell, she was cute.
Finally we got on our way to the bank and the rep was from Indiana, and immediately we all hit it off. She told us where not to live and where we should look. She gave us some information about places to check out and festivals that go on here. We found this HUGE grocery store that had a buffet, sushi bar, living room space where you could hang out and get on line if you wanted. It was really cool. It was like a whole foods on steroids really.
Then the piece Du resistance. Paul's new boss Tim and his wife Elizabeth called and invited us out for dinner. They took us to this pizza place that does brick oven pizzas and it was delicious! The wine, the company, the conversation. Everything was great, they made us feel so welcomed. After dinner they took us for a drive around town, and introduced us to Carl's where they make homemade custard and oh my, it puts Darlings in Champaign to shame. Words cannot describe how tasty that treat was.
All in all, we have had a fantastic first day in the Burg'.
