I do recall if it wasn't for my dear friends Marianne and Rachelle helping me pack up my life in the wee hours of the morning, then into a van then onto a freight truck waiting to be shipped across the border, All my belonging in two feet of space, in numbered boxes, the rest on my back. I might not have made it here. Without the support of my friends and family for that matter I may not have made it here!
After a long year of paper chasing, a lot of tears, and several interviews, I was granted my Fiancee Visa December 5th 2006, and I think it was a week or so later (again all very fuzzy) somewhere between the 12th and the 17th I said good bye to my brother Scott, Julie and Quintin and my closest friends I was off. All I recall is waking up a my brother's house at like 7am and loading the Lola in her carrier, and my suitcase in the trunk, kissed my 7 month old nephew good bye and told him I loved him, and would see him soon. Scott gave me a pep talk the whole hour and a half long drive out of the mountains of Canmore, Alberta. I took it all in for the last time for a little while anyway. It was only a matter of a few hours and I would be with Paul, I was excited and scared,I knew what I was leaving behind, I also knew what waited for me, and the chance I had to take.
It is not very often life gives you second chances and when it does you have to take them. Scott walked me as far as he could at the Calgary Airport. We were both crying and saying our good byes, both proud of eachother for how far we have come, and how bright our futures were. There I was just me, my cat, and my backpack, in the middle of the airport, going through yet another interview with the customs officer. My palms sweating thinking when they told me to sit down why they checked out somethings. All my paperwork was in order, the only snag was the guy had no idea how to process my visa, my fate lied in his hands. Thankfully he sorted it all out and Lola and I were off.
Finally at O'Hare Airport and there was Paul waiting with open arms, I knew then I was going to be okay. Now I am more than okay, I am great. Life has been an adventure, sure I don't get home as often as I would like or as much as I should, but this has been a fantastic experience, even the hard parts, like the "See ya laters". Okay so I may not have my Nova Scotia accent
