This past Wednesday, I woke up for work at my usual time. Fed the cat got in the shower and heard this loud, clap of thunder and saw some lighting. Not quite awake yet I pondered what was the rule of a lightning storm again? NO standing in water? I was sure it would have passed before I left for work. Nope it got louder and worse. Paul got up the winds were picking up so he quickly rescued our plants and took down our baskets before we lost them. I still had to walk to work! It was coming down like sheets of steel! I just threw on my clothes took an extra pair to work, rolled up my pants to the knees then wore sandals so I could have dry shoes for work. The rain didn't let up. Our street was flooded up to my ankles and deeper in places. I tried to hop onto someone's lawn, and sunk from the saturation. As I crossed the street about block from my office building now, the huge bolt of lightning hit the building 8 feet in front of me. I just looked up and said, so this is it huh?
I made it to work and all was fine, then about a couple of hours later there was water so deep it was up past the tires of vans and coming into the building. Across the street you could see waves hitting against another building like the surf was in and it was a waterfront property. Then like nothing happened it was all dry. No more water, nothing. Strange very strange.
Today I drove my bike to work, it was national ride your bike to work day here. Well I get up and there were those dark clouds again. I figured all would be fine I could see the sun trying to break through. Off I went. Thirty minutes before I got off work they issued a tornado watch for the exact time I was to get out of work. I peddled my ass off to get home batten down the hatches and waited for Paul to get home. At first it seemed like all was going to be fine. Then we noticed it was quiet, no birds singing, little traffic. Eerie. We live off the interstate so we have tons of traffic all the time. Then the rain came. It was a normal rain, then it was all over the tv to get away from window and that they had spotted a tornado near us. Well I am panicking. Our whole place is windows! Where do we go? At first we thought the hallway, but then realized we have a window in the kitchen that faces the hall. Then it was the bathroom, only thing stopping it there was a shower curtain. We thought we were fine, the clouds were passing over us. Lola was acting a bit off, staying close to us and low to the ground. Which means she knew something was going on. All of the sudden it rained like I have never seen rain before. We couldn't see out the windows, the sky was black, water was running down the road like a fast moving river. We ran to our room to watch out the window there and the windows started clattering and the wind was thrashing, it was unbelievable. In that moment I looked at Paul and said we have to take cover. So I grabbed that cat who was sitting very still staring out the window. He grabbed Mac (the laptop) and we moved to the closet. No one said a word, Lola sat still gently clinging to my shirt when normally she is all about getting out of your hold.
You could hear the storm blowing and thrashing even on the roof. We had a small crank radio with us since Paul is all about the gadgets and they guy finally says we are out of the storm, that we were having a severe thunderstorm. We were getting pummeled by the rain. Finally after maybe 8 minutes things seem to slow down and it was just a rain storm with thunder and lighting. It was very wizard of oz, only without the house landing on the wicked witch although I am pretty sure we came close! An adventure I hope not to experience again anytime soon. So how was your week?
