Summer so far....

June has flown by in a blur!!! It was an exciting month, with lots going on. Buying our first car, our first camping trip of the season, and just yesterday we decided we would go and get down and dirty with Mother Nature and go Blueberry picking!

We got up fairly early since the temperatures were suppose to get in the mid 30's C or mid-90's F, which ever you prefer. Either way it was stinking hot! Started off at our local Farmer's Market where I bought homemade bread from this super cute old couple. Just walking around there you could feel it getting stiffling. I can take the heat to a point, but then you add humidity I am no good. I wilt worse than any flower. I belong in more northern climates. From there we traveled 30 minutes south of the town to a family owned farm. There were a few people there, and its done on the honour system, where you pick what you can and then you pay after, but they are not always out there so you can just leave the cash on the counter. Crazy eh?! (Paul getting up close and personal with the animals on the farm) The daughter of the farmer was out there, and the was giving us tips on where to go for the best blueberry selection. The farm was huge, they had llamas, cats, dogs, horses, and depending on the time of year, you can pick just about anything that growns in the mid-west. Peppers, tomatoes, onions, blueberries, currents etc. Right now the only thing in season were the blueberries and currents, and green onions. It was a lot of fun , we went to the farthest part of the crop, and found the most delicious berries, all pesticide free so you can sample as you go. In total we got 3lbs of organic blueberries for about $4.00. (Look at that beautiful blueberry!)
Needless to say there was a lot of sweat and labour put into it but that makes it that much more fun. When we started out, the clouds were in and it was a nice cool breeze. That lasted about thirty minutes, then the sun came out, the temperature shot up, and it was getting nasty. I think we were out there about 1.5-2 hours. The plan was to do currents next but it was just too hot and my pasty action just couldn't take it anymore. We did however pick some green onions on the way out. There is something to be said about picking your own food, and seeing what work goes into it. I have to say I have a new respect for my blueberries now, as strange as that sounds. I highly recommend growing or at least hitting a U-Pick in your area, it's a lot of fun, and you walk away feeling more in touch with the earth and what's on your plate.
